The AP, an Octopus hydraulic pump with a NAC-3 computer fed with strings from a rudder position sensor, a Precision 9 fluxgate compass and a Thrane LT-1000 heading sensor. I use Navionics on our B&G Vulcan 7 MFD (it's modest on purpose) and TimeZone is on our "maybe" list.

The AP is used conservatively: we steer to courses, not to waypoints, and correct course on the fly. This reveals lee and drift, plus keeps us aware of the need for sail trim, etc. Still, the greatest aspect of the AP is the freedom from steering...mostly. DDW is not done well by APs...they are too slow to correct in my experience.
Rhyshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00598445145507204424noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6458075112175110787.post-3224327503461483172019-09-01T10:34:46.892-04:002019-09-01T10:34:46.892-04:00Do you have AIS/ECDIS?
When I was at the Nautica...Do you have AIS/ECDIS?

When I was at the Nautical Mind, I scorned it- and frankly, some of my misgivings are true re: size of screen and the ability to plan etc. But it's also damn useful for doing things like waypoints etc. We use Timezone on the tugboats.

Also, you remind me that we recently received an autopilot system for one of the Voith-Schneider tug as an experiment. I'm rather bloody hoping that it works b/c wheeling that thing manually for 6 hours (if we're going to Oshawa for example) is exhausting.Sam McLeanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00828718309612547799noreply@blogger.com
